The Prime Minister has confirmed that before 8:30pm there will be a ban on punting advertisements during live sports events which includes TV, radio and the internet. Turnbull says “No more gambling ads.” The only exception is horse racing. Say goodbye to Joel ‘The Sugar Cane’ Caine from Sportsbet giving you the odds at half time.
“Parents around Australia will be delighted when they know that during football matches, cricket matches and live sporting events before 8.30pm, there will be no more gambling ads,” Turnbull said.
“The new ban would come into effect from five minutes before play is due to begin until after the broadcast event ends or 8:30pm, whichever comes first” Mitch Fifield Communications Minister for Australia said.
Fifield added: “These things are also a balance between recognising that commercial media need to have sources of revenue but at the same time we need to protect families and children.”
What do you guys think about this?
I can only imagine the average parent will be happy about this, especially mums and dads of NRL or AFL watchers, they can now sit comfortable knowing that gambling advertisements won’t be bombarded in their face at a young age. Potential problem gamblers won’t be targeted in their youth which may change their life.
