Betting Preview: Rams Favored by More Than 2 TDs Over Lions

By Lou Monaco @loumonaco

The Detroit Lions (0-6) visit SoFi Stadium and the Los Angeles Rams (5-1) on Sunday for 4:05 p.m. ET (FOX) kickoff.

It’s a battle of quarterbacks traded for each other over the offseason — Jared Goff of the Lions and Matthew Stafford of the Rams. Stafford played his first 12 seasons in Detroit.

The Rams are solid favorites, by 14.5 points (DraftKings, PlayUp), 15 points (Caesars) and 15.5 points (BetMGM, Borgata Sports) at Michigan sportsbooks. Moneyline numbers on the Rams are also huge at -1000 (BetMGM, Borgata Sports, DraftKings Michigan, PlayUp) and -1100 (Caesars).

The Lions are moneyline underdogs at +650 (BetMGM Michigan, Borgata Sports, DraftKings) and +700 (Caesars Michigan, PlayUp).

Over/Under totals are at 50.5 or 51 across the five sportsbooks for Michigan online gambling.

Bad Loss for Lions

What some thought would be the first win of the season last Sunday at home against the Cincinnati Bengals did not pan out for the Lions and was actually their worst loss of the season, a 34-11 setback.

Goff completed 28-of-42 passes for just 202 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. This kind of production can’t continue if the Lions want to be an ounce successful.

Tight end T.J. Hockenson had eight catches for 74 yards and running back D’Andre Swift had just 13 carries for 24 yards and a TD to help spur an 11-point fourth quarter for the Lions.

Rams Rolling

The Rams, winners of two straight games, had no issues at all last Sunday in a 38-11 road victory at the New York Giants. The win marked just the second time (2018) in the last 20 seasons the Rams have been 5-1 or better.

Trailing 3-0 after the first quarter, the Rams exploded for 28 points in the second and never looked back. Stafford completed 22-of-28 passes for 251 yards, four TDs and one INT. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp had nine receptions for 130 yards and two TDs to help pace the offense in the win.

In their last meeting, the Rams defeated the Lions on the road, 30-16, on Dec. 1, 2018.

Who Will Win?

Prediction: Even the two TD-plus point spread won’t help the Lions this week, although I’m intrigued to see how Goff returns to LA to face his former mates. If the Lions have any shot, they need to get back to their 33-point performance against the San Francisco 49ers in the season opener. Since then, they have scored 17, 17, 14, 17 and 11 points respectively. Close for maybe a quarter. Rams 41, Lions 21.
