Detroit's 3 casinos report $116.9 million in July revenue

Detroit’s three commercial casinos saw a slight boost in revenue for July. Combined, MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown and MotorCity casinos reported $116.9 million in monthly aggregate revenue.

Table games and slots made up $115.7 million in revenue while MI sports betting generated $1.2 million with a total sports wagering handle of $18.2 million.

July’s total was revenue was 9.3% higher than June’s mark of $108.1 million. It was also the first July in two years Detroit’s three casinos were open after the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures throughout the summer of 2023. In July 2019, the casinos reported $119 million in aggregate revenue.

MGM Top in Market

MGM Grand Detroit led the gaming market in Detroit with $53.8 million in revenue. MotorCity was second at $38.5 million, while Greektown came in at $23.4 million. MGM’s total was 46% of the market share, with MotorCity (34%) and Greektown (20%) splitting just over the other half of the total market.

The three Detroit casinos paid $9.4 million in gaming taxes to the state of Michigan, in addition to $13.8 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the city of Detroit.

Retail Sports Betting, Fantasy Contests

July’s retail sports betting handle of $18.2 million was down 25% from June’s mark of $24.1 million. Sports betting will likely be on the rise with college football and the NFL set to begin this fall.

MotorCity recorded the highest sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts at $637,681. Greektown was second at $437,203 with MGM Grand Detroit third at $136,948.

The three casinos paid $45,807 in sports betting taxes to the state and $55,987 in sports betting taxes to Detroit.

For June, fantasy contest operators reported total adjusted revenues of $1.3 million paid $110,245 in taxes.
