Detroit’s three commercial casinos now have official reopening dates — and the new Barstool Sportsbook at one of them also will open in time for Christmas.

MGM Grand Detroit and Motorcity Casino both announced on Monday they would be returning to operations on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Greektown announced its plans to reopen on Thursday — Christmas Eve — and the Barstool Sportsbook will open on Wednesday.

“We are thrilled to announce that we’re reopening our doors on Dec. 24,” Greektown posted on its social media pages. “You don’t want to miss what we have been up to on property!”

Detroit’s casinos were eligible to reopen on Monday with the latest Michigan order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Under the new order, areas without fixed seating are limited to an attendance of 20 persons per 1,000 square feet. Food and drinks will not be sold or consumed, and each person must be masked at all times. The maximum occupancy for each room is limited to 100.

Not much has been stated about Greektown’s reopening plans, but MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity have provided more details about what customers can expect when visiting their facilities.

When MGM Grand Detroit reopens at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, it will have over 1,500 slots and video poker machines available, along with the BetMGM Sportsbook. Table games will return on Saturday at 8 a.m. Coat check services will be unavailable, and valet service will remain closed. All guests are required to enter through the self-park garage.

MotorCity is opening its doors to the public at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Based on the new capacity guidelines, MotorCity announced it can accommodate more than 1,600 people in the casino at any time. Temperature checks will also be required for each guest.

Casinos reopening part of new state order

The latest MDHHS state order was presented by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and state officials on Friday. It allowed businesses such as casinos to reopen on Monday, but each of the three facilities decided to wait while they made changes to adhere to the state’s latest health mandates.

Other entertainment options around the state are now open, including movie theaters and bowling alleys. High schools were eligible to return to in-person teaching on Monday.

Certain businesses will remain closed through Jan. 15. In-person dining, bars, night clubs, water parks, indoor fitness group classes and workplaces where work can be done remotely are to remain closed until further notice.
