Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mount Pleasant is one of the more well-known gaming brands in the state, thanks to its wide range of slots, table games, entertainment, bars and restaurants.
Now the casino is set to add sports betting after it announced Thursday that Ascend, its sports bar and entertainment venue, will be adding a sportsbook and will be renamed Ascend Sportsbook and Lounge.
“We will be upgrading Ascend, an already great venue, to accommodate sports betting,” Mike Bean, Soaring Eagle chief executive officer, said in a media release. “Changes will include more televisions, betting kiosks, a betting window and a ticker tape. The improvements will be in phases, initially starting with kiosk betting until the betting window modifications are complete.”
Sports betting will also be offered at Soaring Eagle’s sister property in Standish, the Saganing Eagles Landing Casino and Hotel, and at its Creekside Lounge and the Slot Palace and Bingo Hall in Mount Pleasant.
Soaring Eagle and Saganing Eagles Landing would be the 15th and 16th land-based casinos in Michigan to offer sports betting. The state features 26 casinos, with 23 tribal in addition to the three commercial ones in Detroit.
Soaring Eagle will also be entering the mobile sports betting market. Bean said a sports betting technology partner would be announced in the future.
Detroit Sees Strong 1st Month of Sports Betting
Sports betting in Michigan made its debut on March 11 before the coronavirus shutdown halted all casino activity in Detroit and put a pause on sporting events across the country.
With casinos eventually reopening in early August with health and safety precautions in place and sports resuming over the summer, September was the first full month of sports betting in Michigan.
Overall, more than $33.5 million was wagered on sports during September, with Michigan totaling $4.3 million in sports betting revenue from MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown Casino and MotorCity Casino. MGM had the biggest sports handle with $14.6 million, while MotorCity was at $12.9 million and Greektown recorded $5.8 million.
The city of Detroit received $202,190 in sports betting tax revenue for the month of September while the state of Michigan collected $165,428. For the year, Detroit is up to $298,406 in sports betting tax revenue and Michigan is at $244,150.
