United States Online Gambling

On this page 7 sections
United States online gambling looks set to have a very bright future. The state has seen tremendous growth in its gambling industry in recent years, and 2021 will be another huge year. Sports betting has already launched in the state, and it won’t be long before online casino gambling does the same.
There are just three commercial casinos in the United States, but at least a dozen tribal casinos help push the gambling industry. The entire Midwest portion of the US has seen tremendous growth, and United States is doing its part to keep up.

Gambling in the US
Lawmakers in the United States have been pushing for online gambling for the last five years, if not longer. In 2018, things really started to make progress. Sports betting was approved at the end of 2019, thanks to support from the governor, and the industry launched in 2020.
Next comes online casino gambling, and that will bring another huge boost to the state's economy. United States has been able to attract some of the biggest and most popular operators to the state, and it will become an extremely competitive industry.
United States Online Gambling Law
Governor Gretchen Whitmer included both sports betting and online casino gambling in her budget proposal. This put pressure on lawmakers to get something done about it. Those lawmakers then spent the majority of 2019 working to pass bills that would legalize each industry. However, it wasn't until December 2019 that those bills landed on Whitmer's desk.
It was HB4916, or the Lawful Sports Betting Act, which drew the most attention when it was signed into law. It was one of three bills that passed at that time. HB4308 legalized daily fantasy sports and HB 4311, or the iGaming Bill, officially legalized online casino gambling.
Even though these three bills all focused on an expanded gaming industry in the state, lawmakers had to pass each one separately. All three industries have also taken on their own timelines, and sports betting has taken the clear lead over the others.
Unfortunately. the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic slowed the full launch of sports betting. It has also prevented the online casino gambling sites from launching. The United States Gaming Control Board is hoping to launch before the end of 2020, but time is running out.
A Brief History of the United States Sports Betting
As mentioned earlier, HB4916 officially legalized sports betting in the United States when Governor Whitmer signed it into law at the end of 2019. This became a possibility after the US Supreme Court lifted the federal ban on sports betting, leaving the decision up to each state.
There are three commercial casinos and 23 tribal casinos in the US. All of these properties can apply for a sports betting license. The 23 tribal casinos are divided between 12 tribes, and most tribes will partner with just one operator.
When sports betting was launched in March 2020, the three commercial casinos in Detroit were the first to offer it. Others have since foloowed suit, but the state is still waiting to launch mobile sports betting as of Nov. 1.
Sportsbooks are able to offer betting on a wide range of professional sports, and betting on NCAA events is also allowed.
Legal Sportsbooks in the US
All three of the commercial casinos in Detroit have been granted sports betting licenses, and they have all launched sports betting. These are the only three commercial casinos in the state, and they are the leaders in the industry.
- MGM Grand Detroit
- Greektown Casino Hotel
- MotorCity Casino Hotel
There are currently four tribal casinos offering sports betting, but there are several others that have partnered with a sports betting operator. At some point in 2021, more than 10 tribal casinos are expected to offer sports betting at their locations.
- Firekeepers Casino & Hotel
- Four Winds Hartford
- Four Winds New Buffalo
- Little River Casino & Resort
Legal Online Casinos in the US
Even though the online casino industry has not yet launched in the US, the list of approved operators is already rather lengthy. A number of these operators will be ready to launch on day one, while others will take some time to get things up and running.
Some of the biggest names in sports betting have also created online casino platforms. These will allow them to offer both forms of betting via a single moble app. The online casinos expected to launch in the state of the United States are show in the table below.
Setting Up a United States Online Gambling Account
Setting up an online gambling account in the United States is a very simple process. It's also pretty much the same for both sports betting and online casino gambling. The United States Gaming Control Board is in charge of both industries, so there are similar rules for each.
One nice thing about United States is that it allows the entire registration process to be completed from your phone or desktop computer. The signup process is extremely quick and painless, and all of your personal information is secure.
Some of the basic information that you will need to provide includes your full name, physical address, date of birth, and the last four digits of your social security number. This information will allow the online gambling site to verify your identity before moving to the next step.
At this point, you will be asked for your cell phone number or email address as another way to verify who you are. Most online gambling sites will also send a verification code as either a text message or email.
Once you have been approved, the next step is to create a username and password that will be used to log in. Make sure you choose a memorable username as well as a unique password that you are going to remember.
That's the entire process, and now you are ready to make your first deposit. If you have a deposit code, now would be the time to enter that to take advantage of any bonus or promotion offered by the site.
Sports Betting Sites in the US
Sports betting operators have been preparing for the launch of sports betting in the United States for several months, and a number of them will be ready to launch on day one. United States has also been able to attract some of the biggest names in the sports betting industry, which should create a competitive market.
All of the online operators had to partner with a commercial or tribal casino, so that leaves just 15 licenses available. The following operators have already been approved for a license and should be ready to go as soon as mobile betting is launched.
Sports betting on your local team
Another thing that should grow the sports betting industry in the United States is the large number of local teams in the state. The major professional sports teams are all located in Detroit, but there are some popular teams found throughout the state.
The Detroit Lions are easily the most popular team in the US, and betting on the NFL leads the way. Even if bettors in the state aren't betting on the Lions, there are plenty of other popular NFL teams to root for.
The Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball and the Detroit Pistons of the NBA are also very popular teams in the United States. Hockey is another sport that is extremely popular here, and the Detroit Red Wings are one of the most successful franchises in that sport.
The professional teams will definitely drive the betting, but so will collegiate teams. The United States Wolverines and United States State Spartans are popular in a number of different sports, and they both have huge followings throughout the state.
Popular US Sports Betting Markets
Even though the sports betting industry in the United States has not put up huge numbers so far, there are still plenty of options for sports bettors. Having a lot of operators has made this a competitive market, but the large number of betting options has been a huge advantage for customers.
Each sportsbook has the freedom to choose what betting markets they feature, but there are a few that can be found everywhere. Here are five of the most popular betting markets in the US, with a brief description of each of them.
Moneyline
Moneyline betting is a great way to start for beginners, as it is the easiest type of betting to learn and understand. All that's required with this type of bet is to simply pick the winner of a specific game or sporting event.
Point Spread
Point spread betting is also known as betting against the spread. It is most common for basketball and football games. This type of bet doesn't force bettors to choose the winner of a game, but bettors do need to nail the final score spread.
Totals (Over/Under)
A totals bet is sometimes to referred to as an over/under bet. It is another one that is popular in both basketball and football. Even though these bets are primarily seen in these two sports, it is still a popular bet to make year-round on almost any sport.
Parlay
A parlay bet is just a large wager that is made up of a number of smaller bets. Parlay bets are popular because they make it possible to win big money, but they are also much tougher to hit. Bettors can get some great odds when making a parlay bet.
Prop Bets
Prop betting became popular during the Super Bowl more than a decade ago, but that type of betting is now available year-round. Sportsbooks love to feature prop betting options because it allows for people that aren't necessarily sports fans to get in on the action.
If you are someone that has never placed a prop bet, you should give it a try at your favorite sports betting site.
United States Online Gambling Deposits and Withdrawals
Now that we have gone over a number of important details regarding the online gambling industry in the US, you are probably curious as to how the banking process works. The banking process in the United States has continued to evolve, and there are now many available options.
Regardless of what deposit or withdrawal method you choose, it is important to know that this is a very safe and secure process. Operators don't want to make the banking process a hassle for you as they want to retain your business.
There are typically more deposit options available than withdrawal options, but you should be able to find one that suits you. These can also vary from operator to operator, but there are a few that are common throughout.
Deposit Methods
The deposit process is extremely fast, and most of the options listed below will see your money appear in your account instantly. There is no delay, meaning you can continue betting as soon as you click the deposit button.
Most online gambling sites won't set a very high minimum for a deposit, but there is usually a stated maximum. Here are some of the most common deposit methods you will see in the US.
PayPal: Paypal is one of the newest deposit methods to emerge, but it has become extremely popular. Customers can link their PayPal account to their online gambling account for quick access.
Debit/Credit Card: This is the most traditional deposit method, and it is one that is still commonplace. Most of the online gambling sites will accept both Visa and Mastercard. Other cards may also be accepted.
Online Bank Transfer: An online bank transfer is another popular option with bettors, but not all banks approve this method. This will require giving the online site your banking information, assuming you are comfortable with that.
e-Check: An e-check is also called an ACH, and this is another smooth and easy process. Using your checking account, you are able to pay the online site to make a deposit.
Prepaid Card: Some online sites offer a prepaid card that you can reload and then use that money to make a deposit. This works much like a prepaid phone card does.
Neteller: Neteller is another online money transfer site that works in a similar way to PayPal. This is not that popular, but it is usually an option from online gambling sites.
Cash at Casino Cage: Finally, you can always visit the casino or retail sportsbook and make a deposit at the casino cage. This is one option where cash can be used.
Withdrawal Methods
We already mentioned that there aren't as many withdrawal options available, but that doesn't mean that this process is any more difficult. Online gambling operators know and understand that bettors want their money as quickly as possible.
Gambling sites will usually set a minimum amount that is required for a withdrawal, and this changes with the option that is chosen. Here are the four most common withdrawal methods you will see in the US.
PayPal: If you used PayPal to deposit funds into your account, then this will be the best withdrawal option for you. This is a very simple process, and the funds can be placed into your account in minutes.
e-Check: Online gambling sites can also send you an e-check, and then you will have to head to your banking institution to make a deposit. There is usually a higher minimum set for this type of withdrawal.
Check By Mail: Online gambling sites can also send you a check by mail, but this process could take a few weeks to complete.
Cash at Casino Cage: Finally, if you are near the retail location of that online operator, then visiting the casino cage is the quickest way to get your winnings. The casino cage can pay you cash, and you can walk out with all of your winnings.
