Bonus bets look like “free money” in betting promos, but there’s a crucial difference. These non-withdrawable tokens do not return the stake if the bet wins. That means a 50 dollar bonus bet won't actually put an additional 50 dollars in your account, even if your bet wins. It means the real-world value of the promo is lower than the face value on the bet token.

This article will take you through the key differences between a bonus bet and cash. It will explain the odds impact and the fine print that defines what a betting bonus bet is really worth.
How stake-not-returned works
Bonus bets are a type of non-redeemable token. This contrasts with real money put up as a betting stake, which gets returned whether the bet wins or loses. However, bonus bets operate differently.
When a bonus bet wins and pays out, the original bonus stake is not included in the payout. Instead, a winning bonus wager pays out net winnings. This means the bonus token’s face value overstates the real payout.
For example, let's break down the math of a typical scenario:
- Suppose you have a $100 bonus bet on a sporting event at odds of 2.5. This looks like a $100 promo token that stands to pay you 250 dollars if your bet wins.
- However, if your bonus bet wins, the sportsbook will not include the original $100 bonus stake in the payout. Instead, it pays out $150 net winnings, excluding the bonus stake.
This stake-not-included rule is standard in bonus bets. So the headline bonus value always overstates the actual payout. How much smaller the actual payout is will depend on the odds of the bet you place (more below).
Why odds change value
The stake-excluded treatment means the odds of the bet you place directly impact the real payout and impact what the bonus is actually worth.
If you place a bonus bet with the highest odds you can find, the payout will be closest to the bonus's face value. The shorter the price you take, the smaller the net return, and the harder the missing stake bites.
So a $100 bonus bet placed at the best odds will be more valuable than the same $100 bonus token placed on a more probable bet.
