Seeing an incredible sportsbook bonus online and then following the link only to find the promo has vanished? This community frustration has grown more common as U.S sports betting spreads. The disappearing deal is not bait and switch advertising practice — it’s how dual layers of state regulation control access:

  • Which operators may offer within each state
  • Whether the device's physical location matches the bettor's account's jurisdiction

Looking at both sides ensures a clear picture of what is really controlling the offer's appearance.

U.S. Sportsbook Offers Are State-Regulated

The first hurdle is that US online sportsbooks are licensed state by state. When the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban in 2018 it did not make betting legal everywhere; it handed the decision to the states, and each one now writes its own rules. The state regulator approves the operator, the products and the promotions, bonuses included.

In summary, an offer that already complies with one state’s regulator is not automatically presumed to comply with a neighboring state. The set of live operators, the size and shape of their offers, and the tax they pay all differ across the line.

Device Location Determines Eligibility

The additional hurdle is physical location at the moment of the bet, which slices more finely than just the account’s registered address. Deleting the app and then reinstalling it won’t open a new unblocked path. The IP address, GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular signals all test the device’s actual live location — even if an account admits registrants nationwide, a bet is only authorized if the device is physically inside the legal jurisdiction.

The Geolocation Mechanics

The check runs on every bet, not once at signup, which is why a wager can be refused on a drive that crosses a state line while the account itself stays perfectly valid. Opening an account is usually available to any US adult; placing the bet is not.

Put together, that is why the offer in the advertisement is missing from your screen. It was approved for a state you are not standing in, and there is no voucher that carries one state's promotion into another.

Unlike many online betting services, “porting” an account to a different state does not mean an offer seen online is then available in a person’s new state. Even if the account is reported and updated in a different state, the sportsbook does not assume offers for an old home state transfer seamlessly to a new home state.
