How Promo Codes Work

When you sign up at a U.S. sportsbook to claim a welcome bonus, the sportsbook may ask for a promo code. But not every betting bonus requires a code to be applied, so it's essential to know how to claim the right way the first time.
How the Mechanism Differs from a Discount
A promo code for a sportsbook bonus is not a price discount. In the U.S. betting market, a promo code is an alphanumeric label provided by a sportsbook that lets the account "opt in" to a special offer.
The operator uses it to tag the account at the moment it is opened, so that the right offer — and the right affiliate — is attached to it from the start. Applying the code correctly is what gives the account access to the promotion; it never reduces a stake or a price.
When the code is valid and the other conditions are met, the account is flagged as eligible, and the bonus is released by the promotion engine once the qualifying deposit or first bet lands.
For example, BetMGM and Caesars are listed as examples of sportsbooks that ask for a specific promo code during the registration process. Other sportsbooks like FanDuel or DraftKings apply the bonus to new users automatically, and require no code at all because the offer link activates the code and records in to the back-office system.
In addition, those no-code links work only when the account is created through the offer link. Attempting to play a promo code later, or trying to trigger the bonus through an offer link in an existing account that doesn't qualify for the offer, will not work.
Where the Promo Code Belongs
A promo code for a sportsbook bonus can be applied on the sportsbook's registration page, or sometimes during the first deposit, or on the promotions tab of an active account.
During registration, a sportsbook may ask a player to enter the code in a "How did you hear about us?" style question at the end of the process. Some sportsbook sign-ups use a box labeled "Enter promo code" for the player to type the code.
Other deposit-based promo codes are typically entered upon the first deposit, possibly labeled "Enter bonus code", so the system tracks that the deposit is made by a code-eligible account.
With a code-free welcome offer there is no box to fill at all. Opening the account through the offer link is what attaches the promotion, which is why arriving at the signup page by another route can cost the bonus even though nothing looked different.
