UFC 211 Aftermath – Fights That Make Sense Moving Forward
UFC 211 produced some great fights top to bottom. In what was one of the most stacked cards of the year it actually lived up to its hype. Most of the fights stayed together and it stayed solid. Pettis and Cejudo falling through was a let down, it was a big opportunity for Pettis to really cement his spot at the top of the flyweight division. Watch out for this kid, he’s a future title belt contender!
The main talking point is what happens from here? Well, there is some easy fights to make moving forward. The easiest fight to make from here is a rematch.
Alvarez vs Poirier 2. God was this a fight that could have gone on forever! The way it finished just sucked. It had the same feeling as Weidman v Mousasi. Poirier was looking great and suprised many hardcore fans by the way he controlled the fight and tee’d of on Alvarez. He hurt Eddie bad and then Eddie landed some good shots and the fight turned! It was an epic fight and the sooner they fight again the better.
Masvidal vs Thompson. This fight makes A LOT of sense. Both are coming off losses to the very top of the division. Some say Masvidal vs Nick Diaz should be next but this fight makes very little sense in terms of the landscape of the WW divison. Nick’s last win in was in 2011 against BJ Penn. He hasn’t won a fight in 6 years! At this point in time Nick Diaz is completely irrelevant. What’s the chances Nick even comes back? About the same as McGregor defending a belt!
Masvidal and Thompson also match up really well! Who wouldn’t want to see these two strikers throwdown? This fight has fireworks written all over it. If Masvidal wins he should be next in line for a title shot. You can’t put him to the back of the line after his loss to Maia. That fight depended on which judges were hired to judge that fight because in many other peoples eyes Masvidal won.
Masvidal vs Lawler makes sense as well but Lawler is currently slated to fight Cerrone on 07/08/2017.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Rose Namajunas. This fight speaks for itself. Rose is next in line, not because she’s the highest ranked fighter in her division because she’s not. The real reason is because Joanna is running out of opponents. Rose is next!
Stipe Mioic v Cain Velasquez. Crazy to think that any Heavyweight would clear out the division but Stipe is well on his way to doing it. Stipe has knocked out every top 5 heavyweight except for one, that man is Cain Velasquez. It only makes sense that this fight happens next. Cain’s coming off a TKO win over Travis Browne. These days beating Travis browne doesn’t mean anything, but, he’s coming off a win so that counts.
Future fights we may see is Francis Ngannou vs Miocic fight for the title after his savage KO of Arlovski. If he keeps winning he’ll reach a title shot. Derrick Lewis is also knocking on the door of the top 5. He’ll be fighting Mark Hunt soon and a win over him will see him creep a little closer.
Frankie Edgar vs winner of Jose Aldo vs Max Holloway. What else does Frankie do from here? I’m predicting Holloway to beat Jose so that will work in Frankie’s favour. A rematch between Aldo and Edgar isn’t something anyone’s looking forward to. Jose has already beat Edgar with ease twice. Edgar v Holloway would be an exciting match up though and completely makes sense for Edgar next. Edgar has cemented his spot at the top of the divison. A fight with Lamas makes a little sense but Lamas is looked to already be tied up in a fight.
Edgar should take a serious look at dropping to the 135lb divison. His coach says he can make the weight. Why not drop down and have a crack at the winner of Cody vs Dillashaw?
Jason Knight vs anyone. I’ve had my eyes on Jason for quite awhile now and he just continue’s to put on exciting fight after exciting fight. It doesn’t matter who he fights next as long as it’s soon! Keep an on eye on ‘The Kid’ because win or lose you’ll have fun watching him!
Frankie Edgar v Jason Knight anyone?
